How Gua Sha Can Enhance Your Face Yoga Practice

Today I want to introduce you to one of my favorite natural beauty tools that perfectly complements a face yoga practice – gua sha (pronounced "gwah-shah").

While it may be new to many Western beauty routines, the tool and the practice has been transforming faces in many Asian countries for more than 2,000 years!

When I first discovered gua sha, I really did not understand how purposefully stroking my face with a smooth stone could make a noticeable difference in my appearance. But fast forward to today, and I can't imagine my beauty routine without it – it's been that effective.

What exactly is Gua Sha?

Gua sha is a traditional Chinese self-massage technique that uses a smooth, flat tool – typically made from jade, rose quartz, or other crystals – to stroke the skin along specific meridian lines and acupressure points. These meridians are the pathways through which vital energy flows in traditional Chinese medicine.

In Chinese wisdom, skin conditions and signs of aging result from the stagnation of energy and blood flow, often worsened by our modern lifestyles and chronic stress. Gua sha works to clear this stagnation, promoting free-flowing circulation that reveals radiant skin from within.

The science behind the magic

What fascinates me as someone who appreciates both traditional wisdom and modern evidence is that research is beginning to confirm what Chinese practitioners have known for centuries. Recent research indcates that gua sha can increase microcirculation by an astonishing 400%!

This boost in microcirculation – the tiny blood vessels just beneath the skin’s surface – delivers fresh oxygen and nutrients while helping remove toxins. Over time, this stimulation promotes increased collagen and elastin production, the building blocks of youthful skin that naturally decline as we age.

Beyond beauty: The holistic benefits

What truly sets gua sha apart from conventional beauty treatments is its integrated approach to wellbeing. When you practice gua sha, you're not just improving your skin's appearance – you're addressing the whole system:

🍃 Releasing facial tension you might not even realize you're holding

🍃 Activating the eight major meridian lines on your face, affecting whole-body energy

🍃 Stimulating lymphatic drainage to reduce morning puffiness

🍃 Accessing deeper muscle and fascia release than fingers alone can provide

🍃 Reducing stress through the meditative quality of the practice

🍃 Improving sleep quality and energy levels through better circulation

And beyond all of that, using a gua sha is just fun!

Shortly after I completed my gua sha teacher training course, I held a three-day Gua Sha intensive for the members of The Beauty Garden, my online community of face yogis. Many of the women who joined me had never even heard of the practice and a number of those who had heard about it (some who even owned a gua sha crystal) had no idea how to do it.

Try it yourself! Here’s a 2-minute excerpt from a recent cheek-sculpting class.

But after three days together, the results were already speaking for themselves. Participants were telling me they could see their jawlines and/or cheekbones again, their faces felt relaxed and lifted, and they were experiencing relief from tension headaches and persistent puffiness.

That's the lovely integration of beauty and wellness that makes Gua Sha so powerful.

A practice of self-reverence

In our modern beauty culture focused on quick fixes and aggressive interventions, gua sha offers something different – a gentle, intentional practice that honors your face rather than fighting it. Beyond that, I have found that there's something deeply meaningful about connecting with a wellness tradition that has supported women's beauty for thousands of years.

When you practice gua sha, you're participating in what Chinese medicine calls "Yang Sheng" – the art of nourishing life. It's a way of caring for yourself that goes beyond surface appearance to nurture your overall vitality.

In my face yoga group program, I teach specific gua sha techniques that complement our facial exercises, creating a comprehensive approach to natural facial rejuvenation. The combination is truly magical – face yoga tones and strengthens the muscles while gua sha improves circulation, releases tension, sculpts, and enhances skin quality.
